Feminist Mom, Thank you for your comments regarding women and abuse. I want to state that I believe that divorce is divorce, pain is pain, and no ones experience can invalidate another's. I would also have to disagree with you that Sonia's divorce experience is at the opposite end of the spectrum of many women's divorces. It's just one of many different variations that women go through with divorce. Compassion needs to be given to all people dealing with the break up of a marriage/relationship, not just those who have suffered abuse. If you are in an abusive relationship please get help. Why should my experience invalidate those of other women any more than the experiences of other women should invalidate mine? My article is about my individual experience. I’ve spent the last 45 years fighting for women’s rights and am well aware of the variety of difficulties women face both in this country and abroad–and my heart goes out to them.

The point of my article was to buoy up women going through a divorce or contemplating that or who have been divorced by showing them there can be a meaningful life after a divorce. My article had nothing to do with the plight of abused women, which is a different subject altogether.

You’re divorce experience is at the opposite end of the spectrum of many women’s divorces. While there are guys who leave their wives and kids for whatever reason, there are many women and children suffering, because they can’t get away from an abusive man. The abuse goes on for years as the abuser wants to punish the woman for leaving and uses the kids to hurt the woman by either getting custody of them or using the courts in any way possible to inflict as much harm as possible. You may have been crushed by your husband leaving, but for abused women and children, it is hard to relate to your experience. I hope that your experience doesn’t invalidate those at the opposite end of the spectrum.
